WATCH: Durban North residents go viral with Virginia Circle paddle

Josh and Colin Simpkins said they hoped their antics brought smiles to the faces to all who watched their viral video amidst the heavy rains and flooding.

THERE is something about Virginia Circle and going viral.

In July last year, during the unrest, La Lucia resident Michael Cairns went viral with his clip of playing Scotland the Brave on his bagpipes at one of the patrol points at the circle.

Fast forward to April this year and Colin and Joshua Simpkins have brought the same amount of lightheartedness and humour to what has been a gloomy day for residents of KZN due to the heavy rains.

Joshua, a Westville Boys’ High School learner suggested going for a paddle with his dad, Colin who was only too happy to oblige.

“We live about 50 metres away from Virginia Circle and Josh had come home and said the circle looks like dam. We took a stroll down and thought why not get our canoes,” explained Joshua. “Little did we know that we’d be going viral. Several motorists hooted and waved at us and some even stopped to take photos. Looking at the devastation we’ve witnessed across KZN we hope this brought a smile to people’s faces,” he said.

Matriculant Joshua, said he was instantly recognised by his mates after the clip went viral.

“My friends know both my dad and I paddle and they instantly recognised me in the water. We spent about 20 minutes paddling around the circle and I’m really happy with the awesome comments and that we were able to give people a laugh,” Joshua said.
