Durban North and surrounds bear the brunt of KZN storm

Locals are urged to remain indoors where possible as the storm is expected to continue today.

HEAVY rain wrecked havoc in Durban North and surrounding areas yesterday, and according to weather services, Mother Nature isn’t going to ease up today either.

“Our armed response officers and special operations team members worked tirelessly to assist those affected by the storm until late last night,” said Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell.

“Umhlanga Rocks Drive between the two entrances to Somerset Park was completely obstructed as two walls belonging to a complex had collapsed at about 23:30,” said Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell.

Here are some of the incidents officers responded to:  

23:15 – A La Lucia resident, living in Armstrong Avenue, called the security company for help as flooding had occurred. A boundary wall at a premises in Doreen Crescent, Durban North collapsed.  

22:45 – A resident called for help from her home in Lansdowne Crescent, Durban North. Officers then made their way to Ratoon Hill in Sunningdale where a bank had collapsed and caused the pool to shift.

22:30 – Riverside Road leading to the M4 was completely blocked, forcing motorists to abandon their vehicles. Evacuations continue in eMdloti.

22:00 – Factory workers are rescued via boat in Springfield Park.

21:00 – Members responded to a call in Portland Place where the structural walls of a building collapsed on a domestic worker. The domestic worker was trapped underneath the rubble.

20:00 – Several motorists, including an elderly couple were trapped in their vehicles on the M4 and called for assistance. They were safely removed from their cars.
