Burst pipe wrecks surface of Heather Grove

Residents have called on the city to replace the old asbestos pipes along the section of the road which they say has led to the damage.

RESIDENTS of Heather Grove say the structural integrity of their road is under threat of a major collapse after yet another burst water pipe.

The residential road has seen several collapses, wash-aways and flooding in the last few years which have left residents frustrated and angry. The latest water leak caused sections near the lower half of the road, near the intersection of Effingham Road to cave in.

They have once again called on the City to replace the old asbestos pipes along the section of the road which they say has led to the damage.

Fahim Ball, who recently completed construction of his driveway, said the burst pipe and the subsequent heavy rains had caused further damage to the road.

“This road was rehabilitated about two years ago, although we, as residents felt the work hadn’t been completed properly. Sadly, the latest bursts caused a ripple effect that is running down the side of the road near the pavement. It has damaged my driveway, and there are sizable sinkholes forming now which are of concern. I really hope the eThekwini Municipality is able to attend to this before it gets any worse,” he said.

Last week’s burst also flooded a home and a local church.

Ball said he remained concerned that any heavy duty vehicles travelling on Heather Grove would cause a further collapse.

“While the affected areas are cordoned off, I’m concerned about the road deteriorating further. With so many vehicles using this road, it could cause a further collapse because the structure of the road has been weakened,” he said.
