Durban North SAPS warns of spike in car headlight thefts
Police say criminals are mainly targeting vehicles in undercover parkings.

POLICE have once again warned of a spike in the theft of car headlights in the north Durban policing precinct.
It is believed thieves are specifically targeting VW Polos for their headlights.
Durban North SAPS spokesperson, Captain Raymond Deokaran, said the cases had come in waves, and the station had reported a spike in February this year.

“In the last month, we’ve recorded a case nearly every week. The thieves are targeting vehicles in undercover parking and often go for vehicles left for prolonged periods of time. We have identified the specific make and model of the vehicles being targeted and have increased patrols in the area, however, this crime persists.
“The frequency of the thefts suggests that there is a market for these headlights. It could be taken to a second-hand auto parts dealer or resold on the black market. We are warning vehicle owners to be aware of this trend and urge them to remain vigilant and report these crimes immediately,” he said.
While this incident did not occur in Durban, it shows how quickly thieves were able to remove headlights from a vehicle in Emmarentia, Gauteng.
