Dancers to show their moves at concert

Young and talented dancers from Durban North, Sam Melis and Kimberley Stevens, will be performing on the opening night of the festival and in a performance entitled 4GRAPHY, choreographed by Casey Swales.

IT’S that time of year again when the Durban Dance Movement Festival will be hosting its annual dance event at the Playhouse Drama Theatre from the July 21–22.

This year, the festival celebrates 10 years of showcasing youth dance excellence and bringing over 300 dancers, from all different groups from around KZN, to celebrate dance.

Organised by the NPO Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation, the festival is funded by the NAC PESP 4 Programme fund that promotes and creates job opportunities for artists in the country.

Directed by artistic director Jarryd Watson, the festival will showcase entertaining dance performances in ballet, hip-hop, African contemporary, Bollywood, amapiano and many other styles, which reflect the diversity of arts offered in KZN.

Sam Melis and Kimberley Steven have both trained in ballet and contemporary for more than 10 years with Minette De Klerk Dance Academy based in Durban North.

“We are so grateful to be a part of this festival, and working with Casey and the other dancers has been very insightful and rewarding,” said Melis and Stevens.

Celebrating ten years of dance, the Durban Dance Movement Festival promises to be bigger than ever with only three shows between July 21–22.

On July 23, several dancers will end off the festival with a Day of Dance Workshop for young aspiring learners at Reddham House Umhlanga. Melis and Stevens will teach ballet and contemporary, and other choreographers will teach hip-hop and other styles of dance.
