Tragedy at uMdloti Beach – young man drowns

Despite resuscitation efforts from lifeguards on duty, the man remained unresponsive and was declared deceased.

A MAN, believed to be in his early 20s, drowned on Sunday afternoon (May 26) in uMdloti.

It is understood that the man was among a group of friends swimming near the tidal pool when he was caught in a rip current.

Medi Response spokesperson Kimberly Liell-Cock said they responded to the incident at about 13:00.

“The swimmer caught in a rip tide began to experience difficulty and became submerged. Lifeguards entered the water and retrieved the man, initiating CPR efforts immediately upon reaching the shore.

“Advanced Life Support Paramedics continued with these resuscitation efforts but were ultimately unsuccessful, and the patient was declared deceased,” she said.

Leill-Cock extended her condolences to the family of the deceased.
