North Durban moms share lunch box tips and treats

MANY parents say that the year has not officially begun until the academic year begins and once it’s in full swing, children and parents’ schedules can become pretty busy.

From sport practice to extra tuition, homework and projects to thinking about what to pack in their lunchboxes every day, it’s a lot. When it comes to lunchbox ideas, the pressure is on for them to be nutritious and appealing at the same time.

Northglen News asked three Durban North moms what they packed in their children’s lunchboxes as they began  school last Wednesday.

Lorraine Govender said she strives to pack her daughter, Gianna, high protein meals for optimal concentration.

“Gianna’s favourite is chicken and mayo sandwiches or cheese sandwiches, so for her first day back at school it will be either one of them. She enjoys pretzels and fruit as snacks and there’s always water in her bottle,” she said.

Shivani Pillay opted for chicken for her children’s back to school lunch.

Shivani Pillay says her children, Liam and Brielle, simply love chicken in their lunchboxes.

“Liam and Brielle love chicken, so for the first day back to school it would probably be a healthy chicken wrap or chicken strips with crackers for snacks, some seasonal fruit and a bottle of water,” she said.

Sophia and Ethan Jugath’s lunchboxes will each have turkey and cheese sandwich with lettuce and mayo.

“I cut them into fun shapes with a cookie cutter for extra flair. They’ll also get fruit skewers, baby carrots and hummus, cheese and whole grain crackers. I like to include a treat as well which is usually a sugar-free oatmeal cookie or a small piece of dark chocolate. Water or pure fruit juice for drinks,” said mom Alishia Mudaly.

Alishia Mudaly’s children, Ethan and Sophia Jugath, will enjoy turkey, cheese and carrots among other things in their lunchboxes.
