Northglen 50+: Mall has community at heart

As we mark the 51st anniversary of the Northglen News in 2025, it’s a moment to reflect on the journey from our first edition, published in 1974, to the vibrant local presence we are today. To celebrate this milestone, we will feature some of the most loyal and supportive readers and businesses. This week, we chatted to the team from La Lucia Mall.

LA Lucia Mall has been advertising with Northglen News for about 50 years and in terms of age, they are only a year younger than the publication which turns 51 this year.

“I’m confident that we’ve been advertising with The Northglen News from the very beginning, making it a 50-year business relationship,” said Cindene Sheasby.

Sheasby has been the mall’s Marketing Manager for 15 years and Vanessa Blevins, the Centre Manager for 22 years. Throughout their careers, they have worked to build a strong mutual respect between mall management and the Northglen News reporters and sales team.

“Last year, as La Lucia Mall celebrated its 50th anniversary, we published an advertising feature in the newspaper to highlight the mall’s milestone. It’s one of the many standout moments for us,” said Sheasby.

The mall is also keen on supporting charitable initiatives and non-profit organisations.

“Our community is generous in supporting non-profit organisations and we are proud to offer a venue and various events to enable them to do so, whilst still enjoying a pleasurable shopping experience. We host the North Coast Artists Art Exhibition twice a year, and a percentage of the sales go to The Animal Anti-Cruelty League. In December R34 275 was raised,” she said.

“Our annual gift wrapping station is arranged by Rainbows and Smiles in support of Children with Cancer. Last year R37 718 was raised. We’re also a venue for the CANSA Shavathon and Cupcakes of Hope each year,” she added.

Other corporate social initiatives include the photos with Santa project where R5 from every photo with Santa is donated to Wylie House. In December, R10 000 was raised, and thanks to the generosity of an individual who matched this amount, R20 000 was raised.

“During times of crisis we liaise with various stakeholders to assist communities in need, for example after the tornado that affected Tongaat, we opened our centre management office as a collection point and with the help of various volunteers managed to get much needed aid to the vulnerable victims of the disaster,” said Sheasby.

Another initiative that the mall is proud of is its partnership with The Denis Hurley Centre and their Street Lit Durban Project.

“Alvin Dube from Street Lit Books has been at the mall since May 2024, selling his books in order to make a living and support his family. Find him located at Entrance 4 daily,” she added.

Sheasby ended by congratulating the Northglen News on its accomplishment and thanked them for keeping the community informed with local news.

“It takes great resilience to thrive in a constantly changing world full of challenges, and we wish you continued success and growth for many years ahead,” she said.
