Four treated after fire at popular uMhlanga mall

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation, of which two required further medical treatment at a medical facility.

A FIRE which erupted at Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Sunday evening resulted in four people suffering from smoke inhalation.

KZNVIP Emergency Response Teams were dispatched, as well as eThekwini Fire and Rescue.

According to a statement on KZNVIP’s Facebook page, firefighting crews extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading further throughout the mall.
Prior to that security personnel evacuated shoppers and staff to ensure public safety.
The statement further read: “Thanks to the rapid intervention of firefighting crews, the fire was successfully contained and extinguished before it could spread further throughout the mall. Four individuals were assessed by KZNVIP Medics for smoke inhalation. Two patients required further medical intervention, were stabilised on scene, and transported to a nearby medical facility for continued care.
“At this time, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. A full investigation is underway to establish the origin and circumstances leading to the incident. All emergency services, including fire, medical, and law enforcement, were in attendance and remain active in securing the site.”

Gateway management confirmed to Northglen News that a fire had occurred. “Gateway Theatre of Shopping confirms that a fire occurred on Sunday, May 11, at approximately 18:20, within a tenant’s premises. Emergency services responded swiftly, and the fire was contained without any reported injuries. The safety of tenants, staff, and shoppers remains the highest priority, and an investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway.”
