Ster-Kinekor seeks new premises in Durban following closure of uMhlanga branch

All is not lost for movie-lovers. Ster-Kinekor is currently looking for new premises in Durban.

STER-KINEKOR Theatres announced its closure at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping last Friday. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it’s not all doom and gloom for movie lovers who eagerly wait to catch the scenes on the big screen.

Speaking to Northglen News, Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor said the decision to close the site was not initiated by Ster-Kinekor.

“We can confirm that we have concluded operations at  Gateway Theatre of Shopping cinema complex, with the final trading day on 08 May 2025. While the decision to close the site was not initiated by Ster-Kinekor, we part ways with Gateway on good terms and with mutual respect. We are proud to have been part of the centre’s entertainment offering and are grateful for the positive relationship we’ve enjoyed over the years,” he said

Wylie added that Ster-Kinekor is in the advanced stages of three proposals relating to new cinema locations in Durban.

“Ster-Kinekor remains focused on future growth and continues to invest strategically in areas that promise long-term value. We are currently in advanced discussions around three proposed new cinema locations, all of which are expected to surpass the historical attendance levels previously recorded at Gateway.”

“To our loyal customers who supported the Gateway cinema – thank you. Your continued enthusiasm for the big screen experience inspires us to keep delivering the latest blockbusters and unforgettable cinematic moments at our theatres across the country,” he said.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping management confirmed to Northglen News that a new cinema operator will be taking over and that further details will be shared on social media.
