Durban North church market needs community support

St Columba Anglican Parish will be hosting a market in August. Vendor spots are still available for non-food products, with fees set at R200 per stall and R300 for those requiring electricity.

ST Columba Anglican Parish is inviting the community to a lively market day on Friday, August 2, from 08:00 to 15:00 as part of ongoing efforts to raise funds for the church’s ministries and operations.

The event, organised by Bronwyn Philander, promises a festive atmosphere with about 50 vendors offering everything from delicious homemade treats to arts and crafts, toys, homeware, and beauty services. Entry to the market is free.

Among the local entrepreneurs showcasing their products is Nadine Mangli of Happy Soaps, who will be featuring her range of handmade soaps and body butters for the first time at this market.

“It’s going to be a good crowd and a great market,” she said.

Beverly Payet, of Tastes Like Home, will be running the tea garden, serving up freshly baked goodies and a variety of delicious teas.

“I’m retiring soon, and this is a step in the direction of my business,” she said.

Janet Otto, known as the “Ginger Girl,” specialises in diabetes-friendly, home-brewed ginger beer, as well as pickles and sauces with no artificial colourants, preservatives, or MSG.

“Taste it, and you’ll always come back,” Otto promised, adding that her products have a shelf life of more than a year.

Entertainment on the day will be provided by musician Miguel Philander, who will also co-ordinate karaoke sessions for visitors. Children can look forward to a dedicated kiddies’ zone with a jumping castle, face painting, games, and competitions, including a “Mr and Miss St Columba” pageant.

In addition to the market stalls, a hairdresser will be on site offering hair and nail services, giving visitors a chance to pamper themselves.

Vendors are reminded to bring their own tables, chairs, gazebos, and any necessary extension cords or adapters.

The market is one of several fundraising initiatives hosted throughout the year by St Columba Anglican Parish, which also holds seasonal dances and is planning a grand fete in October.

“We want to say to the community that we’re here, and everyone is welcome,” said Philander.
“We’re trying something new to involve the community and support small local businesses.”

The St Columba Church was built in 1903, boasting rich history as the mother church to several Anglican churches in Phoenix, Durban, Newlands, and Northlands. It was a small wood and iron structure and was built on the property of the current church hall premises.

In 1927 the current and bigger church building was erected on the corner of Buxton and North Coast roads.
“The church community is looking forward to celebrating its centenary as a parish soon. Community members are welcome to attend services on Wednesdays at 09:30 and Sundays at 08:00,” said Father Henry Naidoo.

For more information about services at the church call 065 982 8843. For vendor bookings call Philander on 071 222 2887. Parking will be available on the day.
