Umhlanga Women Achievers leader celebrates strength, connection

As South Africa marks Women’s Month, the spotlight falls on the women who dedicate themselves to building platforms of empowerment, connection, and support. One such leader is Natalie Burne, president of the Umhlanga Women Achievers (UWA), who has been at the helm of the organisation since January.

Burne’s journey with UWA began more than a decade ago, and after serving on the committee for seven years, she felt the time had come to give back in a new way.

“I’ve been part of UWA for over 12 years and served on the committee for seven of those. I felt it was my time to give back, continue the legacy, and help create a space where women are seen, supported, and celebrated,” she said.

Founded more than 30 years ago, UWA has long been a cornerstone for women in business, fostering connections that go beyond professional networking. This year, under Burne’s leadership, the organisation has adopted the theme Networking with Purpose.

“By truly getting to know our members, we can connect them with our networks and help them grow; both personally and professionally.”

Among the initiatives launched under her leadership is a focus on drawing expertise from within. Monthly meetings now feature UWA members as guest speakers, giving them the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and experiences. Alongside this, the organisation is directing its energy toward local charities to ensure its impact resonates directly within the community.

But leading a women-focused organisation has not been without challenges. Burne admits that finding the balance between honouring tradition and embracing change has required courage and collaboration.

“A key challenge is balancing tradition with embracing change to stay relevant. Another is ensuring we reach a diverse range of women. I’ve learnt to listen closely, involve members in decision-making and I’m lucky to have an amazing committee who enable me to take bold steps when change is needed.”

Her leadership style, shaped by her upbringing and her belief in compassion, focuses on empathy and inclusivity.

“I come from a background where helping those around us was a way of life. I’ve learnt to embrace people from all walks of life; you never truly know what someone is dealing with,” she added.

For Burne, Women’s Month is both a celebration and a reminder.

“It’s a time to celebrate women’s achievements, but also to honour each woman’s individual strength, courage, and ability to keep going while supporting those around her,” she said.

When asked what advice she would give to young women starting their careers, Burne’s message is one of bravery.

“Listen and observe. Trust your instincts and step out of the box. It’s scary and nerve-racking, but you might be surprised to find that most people around you feel the same way. And never underestimate the power of building genuine relationships.”

Looking ahead, Burne envisions UWA expanding its reach, deepening its role in the community, and continuing to nurture meaningful connections among women.

Outside her professional role, she finds joy in creativity, the theatre, and time spent with her family, particularly her daughter. Her love for animals also sees her dedicating time to pet-related causes.
