PR councillor warns of water disconnection scam

The suspects involved in the scam solicit bribes in exchange not to ‘disconnect’ residents’ water services.

THE PR Ward councillor for Ward 110, Rowena Bosman, has warned residents about a water disconnection scam carried out by suspects who are purporting to be municipal workers.

The suspects involved in the scam solicit bribes in exchange not to ‘disconnect’ residents’ water services.

Bosman said several incidents had been recorded in the Ward and the suspects involved claim to be from the eThekwini Water Services Directorate.

“While they’ve seemingly approached random homes, they have also specifically targeted several homeowners, some of whom are in arrears with their municipal accounts. Fortunately, to my knowledge, no one has yet fallen victim to the scam,” she said. “There have also been similar incidents reported in Newlands. I urge all residents to remain vigilant and cautious.”

In a statement last week the City warned residents not to hand over cash to anyone claiming they are from the City.

“These criminals are allegedly soliciting bribes from residents claiming they have been sent to disconnect water supply and request a bribe in order for the resident’s water not to be disconnected. The Municipality does not collect cash on the spot, neither does it send employees to collect money directly from residents,” the City statement read.

The City added that municipal employees always carry identification cards and a disconnection slip when assigned to a property.

“Residents who are approached for bribes are urged to report this to the City’s Integrity and Investigations Directorate by calling the toll-free number 0800 20 20 20 or 031 311 4002 or send an email to ombuds@durban.gov.za,” the statement ended.
