Loved ones to gather in Umhlanga to honour Le Roux’s life

Family and friends prepare to say a final farewell to Taryn le Roux, a Durban mom who was shot dead, allegedly by her husband, at a Westville eatery last week.

FAMILY and friends will say their final goodbyes to Taryn “Blondie” Le Roux at Harvest Church Umhlanga today.
Her service will be streamed on YouTube.

Le Roux (48) was shot dead, allegedly by her 63-year-old husband, at Waxy O’Connors in Westville on September 15, following an argument that had broken out between the two.

The husband is currently remanded at Westville prison awaiting his second appearance at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, October 1.

Friends described her as a lovable person, who turned heads with her amazing personality and infectious laugh.

“She would turn heads wherever she went with her personality; she just attracted people to her and she had the most amazing laugh. She would always go out of her way to help a person,” said Michelle Handcock, her friend of 19 years.

Her death has not only affected those close to her but also thousands of people all over the country. Condolences and messages of comfort to the family have been publicly displayed on social media. Influencers and activists against domestic violence say her death has highlighted the widespread problem of domestic and gender-based violence in South Africa which needs to be addressed urgently.

Following Le Roux’s death, Women For Change, a non-profit organisation dedicated to combating gender-based violence and femicide, released a petition  to declare these issues a national disaster, and urged South Africans to sign it.

The petition cites SAPS Crime Statistics from April 2023 to March 2024, stating that 5578 women and 1656 children were killed, with femicide rising by a shocking 33.8% compared to the previous year. A total of 42 569 rape cases were reported, however it is estimated that 95% of rape cases go unreported.
