Durban North SAPS warns of roll of cash scam
The scam typically involves the suspects trying to lure victims out of a store to share a large amount of cash ‘found’ on the ground.
WHILE it is not a new scam, Durban North police have warned the community to be aware of the roll of cash scam which has resurfaced.
Spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi, said they had recorded several cases over the last few months.
The scam typically involves the suspect dropping a roll of paper that has genuine notes wrapped around it, usually within sight of the victim.
The suspect/s then approach the victim suggesting they go to a remote location to share the money, and that is when the victim is robbed.

In the latest case, at a shopping mall in uMhlanga on September 9, the victim was kidnapped, robbed and had money withdrawn from her account.
The suspects stole two of the victim’s cellphones, R2500 in cash from her purse, and withdrew R5000 from her bank account.
“In this case the victim was looking at dish cloths and was approached by another woman, an accomplice, asking her about the quality of the cloths. They are then approached by a man who claims he found a ball of cash, which he showed to the victim. He suggested they split the cash and go outside the mall. Once outside they were approached by two more suspects claiming they were detectives and all three of the people involved (two suspects and victim) jump in the vehicle and go to the scene of the crime.
“Unfortunately the suspects then drove to an ATM in Isipingo and took the lady’s handbag. They removed her bank card and asked for her Pin. Fearing for her life she gave them all the details and the two suspects who had initially approached her in uMhlanga withdrew money. They eventually let her go in KwaMnyandu, uMlazi. The suspects gave back her handbag but had stolen two cellphones, and R2500 in cash which was inside her purse. They left her with R100. She then went to her bank and found the suspects had withdrawn R5000 in cash,” she said.
Shozi urged residents to be aware of the scam and never be lured outside or agree to sharing cash found at a store.
