Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) members arrived at the scene at about 22:05 where they met the deceased’s  brother, who told officers that he had last seen his brother earlier that day.

He later received a distressing call alerting him that his brother’s home was on fire and that he was still inside.

“Members were dispatched to the scene at approximately 22:05 following reports of a blaze engulfing a residence,” said RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram.

Family and neighbours worked frantically to extinguish the flames, but in vain.

“The man was found deceased in the wood iron home. A lit candle is suspected to be the cause of the fire,” said Balram.
