The event, scheduled from 09:00 to 17:00 at Northlands Primary, supports fundraising efforts for the Midmar 8 Mile Charity Challenge, in which each participant selects a charity to back.

The swimathon is being driven this year by father-daughter duo Lance Fraser and Ashleigh Clarke, who have rallied a large contingent of family members to take part. They are calling on individuals, families, schools, companies and community organisations to join them in the water.

Clan Fraser 8 Mile Swimmers have selected CANSA Active as their beneficiary, aligning with their passion for conscious health choices and healthy living.

Numerous other charities will also benefit through various 8 Mile fundraising initiatives. Eighty percent of funds raised go directly to a chosen charity, with the remaining 20% distributed among selected 8 Mile charity partners.

“It’s a fun event for anyone. If you can swim for 30 minutes, that’s all you need to do. It’s not competitive, and participants can choose to swim individually or in a relay,” said Fraser.

Clarke emphasised CANSA’s ongoing need for community support.

“CANSA’s teams work tirelessly and receive no government funding. Almost everyone knows someone affected by cancer. By coming together, we can make a meaningful difference,” she said.

The family first hosted a CANSA Active Swimathon three years ago, drawing 100 swimmers of all ages. Last year the number grew to 135, and organisers hope to see even greater community involvement this year. Younger participants who cannot manage the full 30 minutes will be assisted in the pool by Fraser and other helpers.

The move to Northlands Primary was deliberate, added Fraser, while thanking the school for their ongoing support and for the use of their facilities.

Businesses are invited to sponsor lanes and can obtain a Section 18A certificate from CANSA. Volunteers are also welcome. Food and drinks will be available for purchase, and the day will feature raffles and spot prizes.
