Swimmer plunges into double team selection
Glenashley Prep’s rising star Trent Lucas has earned two prestigious swimming selections.
GLENASHLEY Preparatory School’s Trent Lucas is making a name for himself in the pool, earning two major selections as he continues his rapid rise in competitive swimming.
The Grade Five swimmer has been chosen to represent the KZN Swimming Team, a significant achievement for the young athlete.

Adding to his success, he has also been selected for the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Swimming Team, following his strong performance at the eThekwini Games on October 4.
He will represent eThekwini at the 2025 SALGA Games from December 4-8 in Pietermaritzburg.
Trent’s journey to success has been anything but ordinary. He admits he was once petrified of the water, stepping away from swimming for about three years before returning with renewed determination.
“Now I love swimming because it’s a fun way to stay active and destress me. I train five days a week,” he said.
Outside the pool, Trent enjoys reading, online gaming, spending time with his dog and unsurprisingly, doing even more swimming.
His growing confidence was on full display at this year’s aQuellé Midmar Mile, where he completed the iconic open-water event for the second time. He celebrated a personal milestone by slashing his previous year’s time of 1 hour 12 minutes down to 45 minutes and five seconds.
Trent credits much of his progress to his coach and role model, Siva Padayachee, who at 72 years old recently completed his 24th Midmar Mile.
“I aim to achieve his greatness and dedication when I’m that age,” Trent said.
One standout moment from the event for him was watching differently-abled swimmers take to the water, a display of resilience he says deeply inspired him.
