Tee off for breast cancer survivors
The event will also feature lucky draws, watering holes on the third and 14th holes, giveaways and an auction.
A CHARITY golf day aimed at supporting breast cancer survivors will take place at the Royal Golf Course in Durban on May 21, with proceeds going towards vital medical support for those in need.
Organiser Mike Seligmann of uMhlanga, who is also a volunteer with Reach for Recovery – the charitable beneficiary – said the initiative is driven by the urgent need to assist patients in state hospitals.
“Reach for Recovery volunteers work with breast cancer patients, and see the great need, especially in our state hospitals, on a daily basis,” he said.
“In order for our charity to continue to make a difference and assist breast cancer patients, we need to raise funds. All our funds come from regular fundraising efforts, and our loyal sponsors and supporters.”
Seligmann explained that every cent raised from the event, called Four Balls 4 Boobs, will be directed towards providing silicone breast prostheses for patients who have undergone mastectomies.
“The cost of a silicone prosthesis is exorbitant, and without medical aid, way beyond the ability of our state patients,” he said.
“This gift goes a long way to help complete the healing process, and assists the woman in regaining her confidence and self-esteem.”
The event will feature a 4 Ball Alliance competition, with two scores to count using Stableford points.
“No scrambled drives. No mulligans. Proper golf,” added Seligmann.
Local businesses and individuals are encouraged to support the initiative through various sponsorship and participation options.
These include entering a four-ball at R2 800, which includes dinner, or a four-ball plus sponsorship of a tee box for R4 500. There are options available to sponsor a tee box alone.
Additional opportunities include donating four similar prizes, sponsoring a special auction item such as a getaway to a private game park or a week at a resort, and taking up the headline sponsorship package priced at R17 500, which includes two four-balls, dinner and branding opportunities.
Highlight prizes on the day include a R75 000 hole-in-one prize for the first player to make an ace on the 12th hole, nearest-the-pin prizes on all par threes, and a nearest-the-pin-for-three prize on the par-five 18th hole.
Seligmann emphasised the importance of awareness and early detection.
“Breast cancer is the leading cancer affecting women worldwide. Early detection is the key to survival. Be vigilant and support this charity golf day. Help Reach for Recovery to continue make a difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer.”
