R27m boost for Old North Coast Road upgrade

eThekwini Municipality has approved an additional R27 million to complete the long-running Old North Coast Road upgrade project.

THE eThekwini Municipality has approved an additional R27m to help complete the Old North Coast Road Upgrade and Widening Project in Ward 110, a key infrastructure project expected to improve traffic flow and support growth in Durban’s northern areas.

The funding was approved as part of the municipality’s 2026/2027 Integrated Development Plan (IDP), which was adopted by council and outlines the City’s development priorities for the upcoming financial year. These priorities include job creation, improved service delivery, infrastructure investment and inclusive economic growth.

According to a municipal statement issued last Friday, the additional funding will be used to support the completion of the road upgrade, which is currently about 90% complete.

The project includes widening Old North Coast Road into a dual carriageway, along with upgrades to stormwater infrastructure, the construction of sidewalks, retaining walls and other related works aimed at improving accessibility and mobility in the area.

The City said the additional funding will come from internal project reallocations. This includes available funding from the Oceans Umhlanga Development Project and the Cornubia Boulevard Phase 1 Project in the 2025/2026 financial year.

Although construction is nearing completion, the project has faced a number of setbacks. These include unforeseen ground conditions, prolonged rainfall and the relocation of critical services, all of which have affected project timelines and increased costs.

The municipality warned that failing to complete the project could pose safety risks to motorists and pedestrians, lead to further traffic disruptions, and result in potential legal and financial implications.

To help speed up progress, measures have been introduced on site, including revised traffic management interventions aimed at improving contractor access and reducing delays.
