The clean-up starts at Tenby Place at 07:00 and will then move to Prince Umhlangana Road at 09:00. The group will move to the corner of Belmont Road at 10:00. Everyone is invited to come and do their bit.

“We chose the Umhlangane River Conservancy because it serves as an important cultural and ecological landmark to the surrounding community and many of the Green Buddies members,” said Ashlin Ellan, vice-chairperson for Green Buddies.

In addition, he said the conservancy had suffered great damage during the floods of 2022, and this was a way for the environmental group to restore and protect the valuable piece of ecological wonderland.

“The main goal of GBEC is to educate and inform communities and the youth about the importance and value of the environment and to teach them sustainable living practices that they can implement in their daily lives,” he added.

Initiatives such as the Umhlangane River Clean-up serve as a focal point to unite the local community and help foster community building. Ellan said it also provides an opportunity to educate the locals on the importance and value of the environment that surrounds them.

“We are excited to kick the year off with such an amazing opportunity to work with the local communities who reside around the Umhlangane River,” said Ellan.
