Tee off in support of saving lives

Funds raised from the golf day will go towards the patient assistance programme.

GIVING patients hope for a second chance at life and growing an ethnically diverse donor registry are the two goals the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SAMBR) wishes to achieve.

Kapil Premchand, the sustainability and donor recruitment coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal, said the organisation’s single mission was to save lives.

“For thousands of people with leukaemia and other blood and immune disorders, their only chance at surviving is a bone-marrow transplant,” said Premchand.

“Some patients have a compatible family member, but others rely on a stranger to save their lives,” he added.

That’s where the SAMBR comes in, and together with the private and business sector, is hoping to save more lives.

The non-profit organisation, situated in uMhlanga, is holding its second fundraising golf day at the Durban Country Club on Friday, March 24.

The cost per four-ball is R3 000 and includes arrival drinks, lunch, watering holes, dinner, an auction, a goodie bag and a prize-giving.

All proceeds from the event go directly towards SABMR’s patient assistance programme to assist families who are not able to cover the cost of donor search.

“We are looking for ball gifts and items for our online auction. Companies who wish to exhibit at the golf day can do so. We also encourage companies to pledge their support to the cause.

“Companies who make pledges will receive section 18a tax certificates,” said Premchand.

The organisation is also calling on individuals to register as a donor on their database. You can go here: https://sabmr.co.za/

The SABMR in uMhlanga can courier a cheek-swab kit at no expense to you. All the instructions are included in the kit. A courier will also collect the kit from you once you’ve completed the test.

Alternatively, you can visit the SABMR office at Unit 306, Gateview Office Park, Umhlanga.
