Tale of abandoned pooch rescued by Durban SPCA ends in joy

Lucy the rescued dog has now found a loving home with SPCA employee, Mary Koen.

A DOG that was deliberately thrown down a drain and left to die has found her forever home.

Lucy, who was rescued by the Durban and Coast SPCA in uMlazi in July last year, has been adopted by SPCA employee Mary Koen.

Marketing manager for the association Tanya Fleischer said she was pleased that Lucy’s story has a happy ending.

“We are so thrilled that Lucy has found her forever home with a wonderful member of staff whom we know will love her to bits and take excellent care of her. Lucy is going to the best home, so this is definitely a very happy ending,” she said.

Her new owner, Mary Koen, who has worked for the SPCA for two decades, said Lucy has already adjusted well to life at home.

“I was actually busy with something when one of the SPCA employees took Lucy for a walk. When I saw her, our eyes just met, and I knew I had to adopt her then and there. She has been with me now for a little over two weeks, and she loved her first ride home. She has already explored every inch of my house and has quickly made friends with my Pekingese, Riley.

“She is highly intelligent and affectionate. She has also discovered where her food is kept on top of the cupboards. It is so wonderful that I’m able to give her a loving home, which I don’t think she has ever been in. After being dumped and left to die, she was very wary of strangers when she was first brought to us. She has really come out of her shell and found a place in my heart,” Koen said.
