Sunningdale author launches first children’s book

The idea to write a children’s book came from the many beautiful butterflies Bezuidenhoudt has in her garden and her two grandchildren.

AFTER writing three books – a fictional romance novel, a personal count of the 2021 July unrest, and a series of short stories, Louisa Bezuidenhoudt decided that it was time to wrote a children’s book.

The former educator, now tutor, has just published Betty the Butterfly, which can be bought directly from her and soon from Takealot, too.

“At the end of April 2021, I decided to resign from teaching, and I then started my own tutoring business. In May of 2023, I decided to live out one of my dreams – to write books. I then published my first Afrikaans novel, Lea, as well as Durban Unrest at the end of 2021. In 2022, I published my third book, Letters to My Grandchildren, and recently, I completed my very first children’s book, Betty the Butterfly, she said.

“My grandson is five years old, and my granddaughter is two. My granddaughter reminds me of a little butterfly. We have many butterflies in our garden – where the idea came from,” she said.

The book’s main character is Betty, who is a little caterpillar, and like all caterpillars, she is always hungry. She admires the butterflies, and her dream is to one day become a beautiful butterfly but her friends mock her because of her ridiculous dream.

“Some of my inspiration also comes from spending time with my family and friends and the students I teach. I love to hear people’s stories. I often ask the students whom I tutor what their plans are, and I enjoy listening to their dreams and plans,” said Bezuidenhoudt.

She added that she planned on writing more of these stories because imbedded in them, children learn about nature and valuable life lessons in a fun way.

If you would like to purchase the book, email hopetutoring24@gmail.com. The book will be available on Takealot by the end of May.
