uMhlanga resident claims Ballito Pro Skate title
Kalvyn MacMillan said he was ecstatic with the win and aims to come back next year to defend his title.
UMHLANGA’S Kalvyn MacMillan was one of the standout performers at this year’s Ballito Pro Skate Jam after winning the men’s division.
The 35-year-old, who is no stranger to the Ballito Pro Skate Jam, won the 2021 edition and placed second last year.
Hosted at the Ballito Bowl, the competition welcomed some of the country’s biggest skaters and is one of the regular features on The Ballito Pro which is presented as part of the O’Neill Festival calendar.
“It’s a great feeling. I love skating at the Ballito Pro Skate Jam, and the level of competition is always high. I always strive to win, and it’s always good to have friends and competitors of the calibre this competition attracts. This was definitely the biggest bowl contest they’ve had with guys coming from Joburg, Cape Town and all around South Africa – the bar was definitely raised on all platforms, and guys came out swinging,” Macmillan said.

When asked if he’ll be back next year to defend his title, the answer was, “I am definitely looking forward to next year already. I’ve skated at the Ballito Pro every year since the competition was formed, and if I’m in the country, I will 100% be there to compete. It is the one event on my calendar that I mark out and look forward to,” he said.
Meanwhile, in the women’s division, Cape Town’s Janine Louw (24) claimed the title, while North Coast skater Ezra Vosloo took first prize in the U16 Boy’s Division.
Markus Müseler, Old School Productions event’s organiser, congratulated all the winners on their performances.
“We’d like to extend huge congratulations to all this year’s Ballito Pro Skate Jam winners, and to all the 2023 contestants who put on an unbelievably impressive performance. This is the third edition of the Ballito Pro Skate Jam, and the support of our sponsors and the high standard of South African skating has seen this become one of the dominant skating events on the calendar,” he said.
