Murals set for Durban North bus-stop project
Four bus stops are set for a colourful makeover by Giffy Duminy.
FOUR bus stops in the Broadway precinct are set to be transformed with uplifting, colourful murals from street artist Giffy Duminy.
It is all part of a project involving The Heart of Durban North, Enviro Fixers Durban North and the Durban North Conservancy.
The Heart of Durban North, a collective involving local businesses, spearheaded by Kensington SuperSPAR, has already seen various projects to uplift both the Swapo Road (Broadway) and Adelaide Tambo Drive (Kensington) precinct.
Already, the collaborative project has seen the flower beds in the precinct transformed with a dedicated team maintaining them on a regular basis.

There is now also a full-time security guard from Marshall Security patrolling the area.
Ashleigh Rosenbaum, owner of Kensington SuperSPAR and member of the collective, said she was excited about the latest project.
“We’ve been in talks for a long time with the eThekwini Municipality to get the bus stops restored and in some cases, replaced. While some of the bus stops that aren’t being used were removed, we decided to restore the other bus stops in the area which have been extremely successful. I’m really excited over how the final project will turn out. Since we formed The Heart of Durban North, we’ve mainly focused on cleaning and greening, but now, we hope to uplift the bus stops with some magic and beauty. It is also a great way to showcase local talent like Giffy,” she said.
A key component to the Durban North bus-stop rejuvenation project has been local resident Ellysa Entwistle.
With her help, more than 10 bus stops on Kenneth Kaunda Road, Adelaide Tambo Drive and Prospect Hall Road have been re-painted and cleaned.

Not only were they being given a new lick of paint, but Entwistle and her team of volunteers scraped off graffiti tags and removed any stickers and illegal adverts pasted on the panels of the bus stops.
“The feedback has been great, especially from pedestrians who appreciate what we are doing. We often get people driving past giving us a thumbs-up or hooting to show their appreciation, and I feel this upliftment initiative has parked so much good already. Now with Giffy’s work, we hope the bus stops will be landmarks in the area. He will be painting on the panels of the refurbished bus stops, so the end result, I’m sure, will be spectacular,” Entwistle said.
Two murals are expected to be completed by the start of this week with a further two expected to be completed later this year.
