#BokFriday: Keegan shares his thoughts on RWC 2023
Northglen News chats to Keegan Daniel who shares his thoughts on the Rugby World Cup.
For the past few weeks, Northglen News has been interviewing rugby coaches, former Boks and fans of the game about their expectations and love for the game. This week, we feature La Lucia Ridge resident and former Springboks and Sharks player Keegan Daniel.
Daniel has made 273 appearances for the Sharks across Super Rugby and Currie Cup. He helped the Sharks win two Currie Cup titles in 2008 and 2010 and now coaches at Kearsney College in the U14 age group.
Daniel is Bok number 823.
What is your earliest Rugby World Cup memory?
“My earliest World Cup memory would be the 1995 World Cup in South Africa. I was 10 years old at the time. I remember it mainly because that was the year I had an appendectomy to have my appendix removed. Because I didn’t have to go to school, I got to watch a few games on TV, and I remember watching the semi-final match between the Boks and France on a water-soaked pitch at Kings Park.”
What is you favourite Rugby World Cup memory?
“I mean it’s undeniable one of those memories would be the 1995 tournament. Especially considering where we were as a nation. For a period of time, there was so much unity among the people, it really felt like the country had won. The other memory that really stands out was Japan beating the Boks at the 2015 World Cup in England. I was actually playing for the Kubota Spears in Japan at the time. I was in a pub with my teammates watching the game. I remember the Japanese players being so polite and respectful about their win. A few of my Kiwi and Aussie teammates ribbed me about that loss though.”

Who do you think is going to win this year?
“Of course, I would love the Boks to win again. I will say we are in a really tough pool, however, I do feel there will be other contenders. The All Blacks, France and Ireland look particularly strong, so it will be a fantastic showdown.”
Where is the best spot to watch a Springbok game?
“I mean, places like Boktown have such a vibe. The couch is bigger with the critics, but I think the atmosphere is phenomenal. Personally, I enjoy watching the game with my friend and his sons.”
What is the best snack to eat when watching a Springbok game?
“Definitely biltong. I love it with a bit of Worcestershire or Tabasco sauce mix. I mean, it’s also standard to have a braai going on, as well.”
How many rugby jerseys do you currently own?
“I would say maybe 20. I’ve kept my milestone jerseys like my 50th Super Rugby cap and my 100th Currie Cup for the Sharks. Of course, also my Springbok jerseys.”
