Durban North organisation creates opportunities of freedom

Create Freedom helps human-trafficking victims rebuild their lives and is part of The Domino Foundation's Red Light programme.

A DECADE ago, The Domino Foundation’s Red Light programme developed the first of the Create Freedom ranges of jewellery so that beneficiaries could learn a skill and work towards their personal development.

Now, ten years later, Create Freedom is calling on corporates to support them as it has grown into a sustainable business.

A component of their journey is being mentored in skills and self-confidence so that when they leave the programme, they are equipped to step into the workplace knowing they can earn a living where their integrity and self-worth are secure, hence the formation of Create Freedom.

Natalie Ogden, Justice co-ordinator at Domino, said she calls it an individual development plan and that there were currently three beneficiaries in the programme.

“Create Freedom does not only help the women rebuild their lives, it also teaches them about committing and consistently working towards a goal. They are then able to see that there is no quick fix and that hard work is required. If you need R50, you need to show how you’re going to make R50,” she said.

She added that there are a number of significant women in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel, all of whom were ‘disqualified’ in one way or another, but whose stories were redeemed, stories which tell of captives being set free.

This is also the narrative of the women who are beneficiaries of the Red Light programme, all of them survivors of human trafficking and all of whom have embarked on a journey of rescue, restoration and release into a new life of freedom.

“The range includes earrings, necklaces, keyrings and brooches, all based on a heart design. It is a sustainable business, generating funds for the programme. There are now other ranges added which include more items, such as brooches, keyrings and magnets, perfect for businesses to purchase for staff and acquaintances,” added Ogden.

The turnaround time for business orders is four weeks.

Natalie can be contacted on 031 110 0730 or at justice@domino.org.za for how personal or corporate gifts can be ordered.
