WORK has begun to install 450m of guardrails on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, between Grace Family Church and the boundary wall of Umhlanga Manors.

The project had been approved after funding was secured by the Community Infrastructure Projects (CIP) which funds repairs and construction based on ward councillor submissions.

Reckless driving

For years residents from the Manors had raised the alarm about reckless driving and motorists speeding after a series of accidents where drivers had crashed into the boundary wall and sometimes into the complex.

Richard Edwards, the chairperson of Umhlanga Manors Homeowners Forum, gave some background to the project.

“Prior to the installation of the guardrail, many of our residents would live in fear, especially those walking down to the village and residents living closest to the boundary wall bordering Umhlanga Rocks Drive. It was a nightmare because of reckless driving. However, since work began to install the guardrails residents are breathing a sigh of relief.

“We are very grateful to ward councillor Bradley Singh who has helped push for the project and used CIP funding to make it possible. The guardrail will run from Grace Family Church all the way up to the top of our northern complex. At this rate we anticipate work to be completed within the next two weeks. This project shores up the security of our residents,” Edwards said.
