New group hopes to grow trail running at Virginia Bush Nature Reserve

The new 50/50 group hopes to bridge that gap between runners and walkers.

IN a bid to boost the love for trail running and promote the beauty of Virginia Bush Nature Reserve, Riverside Trail has started a new 50/50 group.

Durban North resident and member of Riverside Trail since 2013, Claire de Sylva, said she and trail-running stalwart, Buzz Bolton, are passionate about the 50/50 group to bridge that gap between runners and walkers.

The group meets every Wednesday at 05:15 at Seattle Coffee at the Checkers shopping complex on Virginia Circle.

“A lot of people didn’t feel comfortable to come and join Riverside Trail on our weekly runs as they thought they’d be left behind. Our motto is ‘No one is left behind’, and Buzz has been so amazing in helping with the new group. The 50/50 group is great because you can walk and run alternatively to check where your fitness levels are at. It is also a launching pad to move through to the faster groups that cover more mileage.

“Currently, we have an amazing group of runners from all ages enjoying the trails, but we’d love to see that footprint grow and get the community more involved, especially younger children exploring the bush. We have four pacing groups made up of walkers, walk-runners, intermediate and speedsters. There is something for everybody. We also host Saturday adventure runs, which happen on an ad-hoc basis where we visit trails in and around the Durban area. It really is to increase the love of trail running and our natural resources like Virginia Bush Nature Reserve,” she said.

Don’t miss market and fun run

On Monday, February 19th, the Kinship Programme will host a fun run at the Virginia Football field on Danville Avenue. There will be a 2km kid’s route and a 5km adult’s route through the reserve. Tickets cost R50 for the kids’ run and the adults’ run. There will also be a thrift sale that is open to the whole community, even if you aren’t taking part in the run. All funds raised go towards Riverside Trail, who, together with The Kinship Programme, look after the trails at Virginia Bush Nature Reserve. The event begins at 17:00.
