Locals show colourful kindness at La Lucia Mall Shavathon

CANSA Shavathons took place at various shopping centres across the province.

LA Lucia Mall was awash with residents and volunteers sporting colourful hairstyles over the weekend as they showed their solidarity for cancer survivors at the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (CANSA) annual Shavathon.

Several fundraising CANSA Shavathons took place at various shopping centres across the province for CANSA with 18 in the province alone.

“The theme for this year’s Shavathon is to ‘Be Colourfully Kind’,” explained Natasha Brown, KZN sustainability coordinator for CANSA.

Brown said she was blown away by the support shown by the KZN community.

“I was travelling between various malls supporting the cause, and the support is just fantastic. Durban always shows incredible support for this wonderful initiative. We are also grateful to our volunteers from Varsity College who assisted us on the day and to those who gave their time selflessly,” she said.

At the Shavathons, Durbanites could either spray their hair or cut off their hair to donate to CANSA to make wigs for cancer survivors.

“Cancer patients often undergo chemotherapy, and hair loss can occur when chemotherapy drugs travel throughout the body to kill cancer cells. Some of the drugs also damage hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out. CANSA receives human hair donations (ponytails) in order to make sufficient wigs for cancer survivors requesting them. These wigs are distributed, as requested, to CANSA Care Centres all over the country and given to cancer survivors who need them most,” Brown said.
