Durban North learners pedal to make a difference

The pair challenged riders from other schools to join them and their cycling mates on either of the two days and be part of the #DominoEffect.

NORTHWOOD School’s sports calendar has April 21 highlighted. Jacques Richter, in charge of the cycling group, noted that the cohort is determined to be part of one of Durban’s premier cycling events, the iconic aQuellé Tour Durban.

“We will probably field a team of thirty plus, and with the weekend’s theme being ‘Family Fun for Everyone’, we are hoping to persuade some dads to join them. In 2022, we had our first Dads and Lads Cycling trip down the Wild Coast, so the scene is set,” he said.

Throughout the year, the group rides two mornings each week and weekends, as well. Cycling trips to Karkloof, Giba Gorge, Holla Trails or one of the pump tracks in the Durban area feature in an energetic schedule.

The young pedalling enthusiasts have set their sights on the road races scheduled for the Sunday of the two-day event, but some may be considering the previous day’s off-road mountain biking events or the new gravel ride which is the fastest growing form of cycling.

Matthew Balmforth and Liam Nel, who share the captaincy of Northwood’s cycling enthusiasts, agreed they and their peers have a reason to take part – the thrill of participating in a great cycling experience.

“One of the school’s near neighbours is The Domino Foundation. As Domino is the beneficiary of aQuellé Tour Durban, we will be supporting them, as well,” said Balmforth.
