LAST week, libraries across the country celebrated South African Library week.
The event, which took place from March 18 to March 24, was celebrated under the theme ‘Libraries foster social cohesion’.
This was no different as Durban North Library hosted a week of activities which included visiting local schools to promote the love for books and reading.
The library also hosted a membership drive at the Kensington Square shopping centre, explained head librarian Veni Reddy.

The library also hosted a book reading and educational day out for St Martin’s Pre-Primary School.
“The theme for this year’s SA Library Week underscores the crucial role libraries play in uniting communities. We hosted numerous in-person events that brought together people of all ages and backgrounds during the week. These events fostered a sense of connection and belonging. It is thanks to our generous supporters that we are able to best support and strengthen our community.
“Libraries serve as hubs where people from diverse backgrounds can come together to exchange ideas and learn and engage in cultural and intellectual activities. By providing access to information, technology, resources and programmes, libraries broaden horizons, connect individuals and foster a shared sense of purpose and identity,” she said.
Reddy said the library will begin its Easter Holiday programme on Wednesday, March 27.
