Our Lady of Fatima net victory at SPAR hockey challenge

In recent years, the regional title has ping-ponged between Fatima and Danville Park.

IN a seesaw of results, Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School (DCS) reclaimed the Durban North Regional title in a well-contested final of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge that took place on Saturday, March 16, at Curro Salt Rock.

They met defending champions Danville Park Girls’ High School and beat them 1–0 in the final of the tournament.

In recent years, the regional title has ping-ponged between Fatima and Danville Park, with Danville being victorious in 2021 and 2023, and Fatima in 2022 and, now, raising the trophy after a successful run.

This is the fifth time in the fourteen years of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge that Our Lady of Fatima are making an appearance at the Grand Finals.

Our Lady of Fatima is the fourth team to secure a spot at the Grand Finals and join Durban Girls’ College, The Wykeham Collegiate, St John’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) and St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG).

Captain of the Fatima team Katrina de Carvalho said she was proud of her team’s efforts on the day.

“There was a big shift from last year as we also met Danville in the final of the Durban North Regional. I think the team were mentally prepared for the challenge, and the competitive spirit between the two teams was great. I’m so proud of the team, and I admired their courage out on the turn. I think we are all excited about playing in the Grand Finals and doing our school proud,” she said.

Her comments were echoed by Sophia Kerr, vice-captain of the team.

“I think the team showed their mettle through the tournament. While we are excited about the Grand Finals, our focus is now on the St Mary’s Waverly hockey tournament. What I feel helps in the SPAR tournament is that the games are only 20 minutes long. There is a different strategy in this type of tournament when compared to a full hockey game. The shorter format ensures the urgency and intensity of our game,” she said.
