North Durban communities urged to join fight against childhood cancer

The CHOC COWS Golf Day, organised by Belinda King, with the assistance of the COWS, the official sports fundraisers for CHOC (the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa), will go a long way towards helping children with cancer.

AN uMhlanga resident, Belinda King, is raising funds for The COWS and CHOC for the fourth year running and is appealing to corporates and the community to assist in whichever way they can.

The COWS are a group of people who raise funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa. The COWS, the official sports fundraiser for CHOC, has raised a substantial amount of money for children living with cancer.

Speaking to Northglen News, Belinda King said she decided to assist her son’s former teacher, who was swimming the Midmar Mile about five years ago, by holding a golf day.

“I didn’t even know how to organise a fundraiser, but when I saw the teacher’s appeal on Facebook, I knew that I had to do something so I started researching everything I could. Now, the CHOC golf day is in its fifth year and has grown tremendously with new corporate and private sponsors coming on board each year,” she said.

“This year, CANCOM and SMG Yamaha have joined as sponsors which we are so grateful for. We are still looking for sponsorship of holes and prizes,” she added.

She said it was heartwarming to see how the business and private sector so willingly open up their hearts to CHOC and have come on board to support the CHOC CHOWS Golf Day.

The funds are used for various treatments and programmes, accommodation, transport, the purchase of programme vehicles and parent, child and family support programmes.

Jordan Titmuss, who is a CHOC volunteer, and who will be involved in the proceedings of the day, said he was fully invested in initiatives such as this and also encouraged the community and business sector to support the event.

“I go to the CHOC House at Albert Luthuli Hospital every Wednesday to visit the children. We play, talk and laugh, and it’s my way of honouring my brother who passed away from cancer in 2021. This is how I honour his legacy – by supporting children with cancer in any way I can,” he said.

The golf day takes place at Umhlali Country Club on April 24. The cost is R2 500 per player. For more information, contact King on 083 654 3119 or email kingbelinda704@gmail.com.
