Three arrested after Avoca, Greenwood Park robberies

The suspects were found with cellphones and cash believed to have been stolen in two crimes in the north Durban area.

THREE suspects, believed to be linked to two cases in Avoca and Greenwood Park, were arrested on Tuesday afternoon on the M27 in the vicinity of Verulam.

The suspects were found with a number of items believed to have been stolen in the arrest.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said they were alerted to the first incident on Duffy Crescent in the Avoca area just after 11:15.

“It was established that a shop patron was approached by a suspect under the pretence of knowing him. During the interaction, the suspect managed to steal the patron’s phone without him noticing. He then got into a silver Toyota Ayga and fled the scene. Only then did the patron discover that his phone had been stolen,” Powell said.

Utilising CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems in the area, officers recorded the registration plate of the suspect’s vehicle.

“A second robbery was reported on Clyde Road in the Greenwood Park area shortly after the first and involved the same suspect and vehicle. This time, a gardener was robbed of his earnings and cellphone. The suspect’s vehicle was then spotted in uMhlanga, joining the M4 northbound, by members of our Special Operations Team.

“Greenwood Park SAPS Trio Crimes Unit was immediately contacted to assist. The vehicle was eventually brought to a halt on the M27 in the vicinity of Verulam where three suspects were apprehended. Upon searching the suspects, the stolen items, including cellphones and cash, were recovered,” he said.
