Police officer survives hail of bullets in N2 cash-in-transit robbery

The suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and robbed the cash-in-transit guards of their weapons.

MORE details have emerged about the brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on the N2 near the KwaMashu off-ramp on Thursday morning.

A police officer, who was on his way to an operation in Inanda, happened to be behind the CIT vehicle when it came under fire.

The police captain, who was in an unmarked vehicle, came under fire by the group of armed suspects.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the officer escaped unharmed.

“An unknown number of suspects, who were travelling in multiple vehicles and targeting a cash delivery truck, without any notice, opened fire at the police officer’s unmarked bakkie which was driving behind the money vehicle.

“The police officer, who was on his way to an early operation in Inanda and wearing his protective gear, returned fire and found his way out of the vehicle and took cover. The officer also managed to stop other motorists who could have become unsuspecting victims of the brazen criminals who went on to blow the truck open and made way with an undisclosed amount of money,” he said.

They also robbed the CIT security guards of three firearms, one of which was a rifle.

Netshiunda urged anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
