Domino babies receive surprise visit

It was a special time of intergenerational bonding as the two age groups spent time enjoying each other.

WHEN residents and staff of Mothwa Haven Durban in Berea trekked across the Umgeni to spend time with the much younger residents of The Domino Foundation’s Babies’ Home in Durban North, there were many wide-open eyes, both young and elderly, shining with delight.

It was a special time of intergenerational bonding as the two age groups spent time enjoying each other.

“It was a blessing to share those wonderful moments with the children,” said Sanet Van De Walt, secretary of Mothwa’s residents’ committee.

Both seniors and babies need the care and intervention of others. Little ones who have been abandoned often experience a measure of trauma and need psychosocial support, and research shows that 43% of older people experience loneliness and depression. The time of interaction at the Babies’ Home between the two groups brought light in the hearts of all concerned.

Chairperson of the residents’ committee Estelle Molloy said that Mothwa believes that the babies are our future generation.

“We want to be a part of their timeline while they are at Domino, and we aim to assist the foundation in any way possible…with love from our home to theirs.”

House mum Precious Thabethe added, “We were very grateful for the generous donation of non-perishables and toiletries our visitors brought.”
