Umhlanga Ski-Boat Club throws Christmas in July party for elderly

Music, games and dancing were the order of the day as residents celebrated a special outing in uMhlanga.

THE spirit of giving was alive at the Umhlanga Ski-Boat Club last week where members treated residents from the Association for the Aged (TAFTA) John Conradie House to a Christmas in July party.

Music, games and dancing were the order of the day as residents celebrated a special outing in uMhlanga.

One of the organisers and member of the ski-boat club, Rene Pheasant, explained they had hosted residents at their club house for the last decade.

“Every year we host the residents from John Conradie House at the club for a Christmas lunch and party. It was a Good Samaritan, who used to live in uMhlanga, who made this all possible. He reached out and said why not treat the elderly to the Christmas in July party. The responses from them have been heartwarming and we want the residents to know we care. It’s just inspiring to see how grateful our members are and the volunteers who’ve made the day a resounding success,” Rene said.

Irene Chetty, wellness coordinator at TAFTA John Conradie House said she was blown away by the reception and the love shown by everyone involved.

“It was an amazing day. One of the aspects we promote at TAFTA is active living and being able to get the residents out socialising, singing and dancing was just great. We are so thankful to the Umhlanga Ski-Boat Club for their support. The residents loved every moment of being out,” she said.

Jo Parker, club manager of the ski-boat club echoed those sentiments.

“For some of the residents the outing is something to celebrate. It was incredibly special to see everyone have fun and enjoy the spirit of Christmas in July. We look forward to hosting the residents of TAFTA again in December,” she said.
