uMhlanga resident shares the importance of Diwali

Former finalist in the ZEE TV Miss India South Africa pageant, Diaa Krsna, speaks about the meaning of Diwali and why she loves giving back to others in need.

FOR uMhlanga resident Diaa Krsna, Diwali holds a special place in her heart and is about making a positive change for those around her.

Krsna, a former finalist in the ZEE TV Miss India South Africa pageant, recently spoke to Northglen News about the festival, also known as the Festival of Lights.

“Diwali holds a special place in my heart, symbolising much more than just the triumph of light over darkness. For me, it represents a profound opportunity for renewal, reflection and reconnection with those I love. As the festival approaches, I find myself drawn to the rituals and traditions that bring warmth and joy into my life. The act of lighting diyas is not just about illuminating my home; it is a moment of setting intentions, shedding negativity and embracing hope. Each flickering flame reminds me that no matter how challenging the past year may have been, there is always the potential for growth and new beginnings.

“Diwali is also a time for cherished connections. I look forward to gathering with friends and sharing laughter, stories and delicious food. These moments deepen our bonds and create lasting memories. It is a reminder of the importance of nurturing relationships and being present for one another. The festival encourages me to express gratitude for the people in my life, acknowledging their support and love,” she said.

Diaa added that the New Jagannath Puri Temple in Phoenix, which she is a part of, has also allowed her to give back through various initiatives like food drives, charity events and community service.

“These efforts resonate deeply with me, especially during Diwali. Being involved in community service during Diwali feels particularly meaningful. It is a wonderful reminder that while we celebrate our own blessings, we can also uplift those in need. Whether through donations or volunteering, I find a profound sense of fulfilment in contributing to the well-being of others.

“One of the things I love about Diwali is the sense of togetherness it fosters, not just among people but also in our appreciation for all living beings. Many families take care to include animals in the celebrations, offering them treats or ensuring they are part of the joyful atmosphere. It is a reminder of the interconnectedness of life and the importance of showing kindness to all creatures during this auspicious time,” she said.
