Iconic uMhlanga Lighthouse to celebrate 70th birthday

The iconic structure stands 21m tall and was built in 1954 to replace The Bluff Lighthouse which had deteriorated.

AN iconic landmark visible from most spots along the uMhlanga Promenade, the Umhlanga Lighthouse, is viewed as a historic beacon of safety and a symbol of strength, and this year, it celebrates its 70th anniversary.

In light of this, the Umhlanga Community Tourism Organisation (CTO), in partnership with the South African Association of Ship Operators and Agents (SAASOA), has announced ‘Lighthouse Week’, a celebration that honours the lighthouse’s significance and history.

The Umhlanga Lighthouse, which was completed on November 25, 1954, and has stood as a sentinel on the coastline, was built to replace the Bluff Lighthouse that was commissioned in 1869 but later abandoned due to deterioration.

This iconic structure stands 21m tall and its light has a range of 24 nautical miles.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, there will be a series of events, including a guided tour of the lighthouse.

“Visitors and locals alike will have the chance to explore its history, architecture and contributions to the maritime industry. These tours aim to educate and inspire, fostering greater appreciation for the lighthouse’s role in the community. The tour of the lighthouse will be done from Monday, November 25, to Friday, November 29, at 10:00 daily for that week,” said Jeannie Sarno, chairperson for Umhlanga Tourism.

There will be no access to the inside of the lighthouse.
