Security officer saves Effingham community from alleged armed robber

Swift Private Security commended an unarmed community street-patrol officer for his bravery and for acting selflessly to ensure the community was kept safe.

AN alleged armed robber was stopped in his tracks at the corner of Jamnadas Lane and Effingham Road yesterday (November 21) when a brave unarmed security officer intervened after the community alerted him.

Swift Private Security was alerted to an armed robbery in progress which occurred at about 18:00. Several vehicles were dispatched to the scene.

“Officers observed a suspect being pursued by a group of community members. Swift Private Security officers assisted, disarming the suspect and securing him with handcuffs until SAPS arrived,” said Swift Private Security spokesperson Sanveer Sooklall.

It was established that the incident began when a group of children playing nearby reported to a community street patrol security officer, employed by another company, that they had been threatened and nearly robbed at gunpoint by the suspect.

“Acting courageously, the unarmed security officer pursued the suspect, who then brandished a firearm. A scuffle ensued before the community and Swift Private Security officers arrived to assist,” said Sooklall.

The suspect was found to be in possession of a replica firearm and was taken to Greenwood Park Police Station for further investigation.
