Durban North school shares ‘yummy’ recipes for darlings out there

The demand for the recipe book is high as many parents have bought a few copies for their family members as Christmas gifts.

A DURBAN North playschool teacher has revived an old fundraising idea that the school initiated in 2003. It was a recipe book with recipes sent in by parents from all the little ones at the school, each tried and tested and cutely named after each child.

This year, Jackie Boyd of St Andrews PlayCorner brought the book back to life with 250 delicious recipes and treats ranging from cakes, salads, snacks, soups, tarts, main meals and much more.

“The book is being sold at R280 each and makes the perfect gift for a loved one, especially aunty or grandma. Money raised from the sales will be used to purchase new toys for the school, and the old ones will be donated to various children’s homes in the area,” Boyd told Northglen News.

The initial book contained no pictures of the dishes or children, so Boyd decided it was time to spruce things up.

She called on Erin Fernandes of Vanilla Moon who compiled and designed the book. The only thing missing was a name, but then it struck her: Oh Yummy! Darling.

“Children and parents call me Jackie Darling because when I teach the children manners, I tell them, ‘Say please and thank you, Jackie, darling’. So Erin came up with the perfect name, which was a surprise. I didn’t know the name of the book until I saw it, and I love it!” said Boyd.

“It’s a lovely gift for family members, and this year, older siblings who were previously at the school also featured, so it’s a keepsake. The paper is high quality gloss just in case anything spills. It’s been beautifully packaged by Erin,” she said.

Oh Yummy! Darling is split into different categories so if chicken is on the menu for dinner, all you have to do is turn to the section and take your pick from the numerous recipes. There’s also a personal message from Boyd and the school’s famous chicken stew recipe which is a firm favourite – just ask the little ones.

The demand for this recipe book has been great with a few copies even reaching international shores. If you’d like to purchase one, or three, there are only a few copies left so contact Boyd on 083 626 7039.
