Durban and Coast SPCA unveil new mascot

The SPCA’s unveiling is way to keep beloved pooch, Humphrey’s memory alive.

THE Durban & Coast SPCA has honoured the memory of beloved pooch Humphrey, who died last year, by naming their new mascot after him.

Humphrey’s winning attitude, soulful brown eyes and his support in raising funds and awareness for the association with the help of his owner Alwyn Immerman were the reasons why he was so loved.

Through their fundraising initiatives, Humphrey, who Alwyn adopted from the SPCA in 2011, raised more than R1 million for the association.

Humphrey, the beloved canine, died last year.

Marketing manager of the association, Tanya Fleischer, said the SPCA’s unveiling was a way to keep Humphrey’s memory alive.

“Our previous mascot, Dougal, had served his time and we were looking for someone new. When we were thinking of a name for our new mascot we decided to open the floor to the community for help. We asked people on our Facebook page for name suggestions.

“So many people also suggested Humphrey and we thought it was only fitting to keep his memory alive. We were deeply saddened by Humphrey’s passing as he was loved and treasured by us. The reactions so far to the announcement have been positive as so many people knew the amazing work that Alwyn and Humphrey did,” she said.

The mascot suit was made specifically in Cape Town before being shipped to Durban.

“Visitors and residents may get lucky in meeting Humphrey at some of our fundraisers. He will also join us when we visit schools on educational drives,” she said.
