Popular uMhlanga beachfront restaurant refutes closure claims

The restaurant is set to reopen on April 7 in a new spot along the uMhlanga Promenade.

LOCAL businessman Duncan Heafield and owner of the Bellezar restaurant on uMhlanga’s promenade has clarified rumours suggesting the eatery had closed its doors.

On Tuesday a comment on a popular Facebook page suggested the restaurant, which has been open for the last seven years, had shut up shop.

Durbanites reacted with sadness to the news as another popular restaurant, La Spiaggia, situated next door, closed in August last year after 28 years in business.

However, that is not to be for Bellezar, confirmed Heafield.

“We have closed for renovations and will be open again on April 7. We will however be moving to a new site also along the uMhlanga promenade, not far from where we used to be situated. There are some exciting plans for our previous site and it bodes well for locals and visitors to uMhlanga’s shores. Just watch this space,” he said.

Heafield, who is also responsible for the Northern Corridor Hospitality Association, said it was an exciting time for restaurants in uMhlanga with 15 new establishments opened last season.

“I think the growth in restaurants along the northern corridor, especially in uMhlanga, shows that the confidence is back. The eThekwini Municipality has played its part to restore confidence by fixing sewerage infrastructure which had hampered hospitality in the past. Now however, the area is growing from strength to strength and there are some exciting new restaurants that will open its doors this year,” he said.
