Unacknowledged matriculants encouraged to sign up for CACH

The Central Application Clearing House (CACH) helps matriculants to secure a spot in higher education institutions.

EDUCATION is not going to be the key to success for thousands of 2024 matriculants who have aspirations of furthering their academic career as universities across the country reveal that they cannot accommodate many new students.

Last week, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), said in a statement that of the more than 290 000 first year applications last year, less than 9 000 students could be accommodated. In 2024, 337,158 matriculants qualified for university admission, but only 202,000 spaces were available in the country’s 26 public universities. This means that only 60% of eligible students were able to secure university admission.

However, the Department of Higher Education and Training encourages matriculants to register in the Central Application Clearing House (CACH) to secure a spot in the local higher education institution. CACH provides a crucial service for South African matriculants seeking admission to post-school institutions such as universities and TVET colleges.

Since its inception in 2013, CACH has given thousands of students a second chance to secure placement, particularly those whose initial applications were unsuccessful, but whose final Grade 12 results have improved.

According to CACH’s website, sign-ups are open from 8am on January 20 until March 31, 2025. It suggests that when completing a sign-up, you will need a copy of NSC/SC or statement of the results, ID number or Examination number as it appears on your NSC statement of results, cell number and email address.

To register on CACH, visit the website: https://cach.cas.ac.za/.
