Section of Rinaldo Road closed after storm damage

Several roads in north Durban were severely damaged after heavy rains on Tuesday evening.

WORKERS from the eThekwini Roads and Stormwater Department have begun work to repair a section of Rinaldo Road that was severely damaged during Tuesday night’s heavy rains.

Two sections, one at the intersection of Harrison Drive and Rinaldo Road, and a second patch of tar near the Rinaldo Road industrial park, were damaged during the storms.

Both these sections of Rinaldo Road had been damaged in last week’s heavy rains.

The City has closed the road between Chris Hani Road and Malacca Road while repairs continue. Metro Police were in attendance diverting traffic.

Malacca Road, near the refuse dump, was also covered in sand, making it difficult for some vehicles to get through.

Another road impacted by the heavy rains was the M4 (southbound) just before the Virginia off-ramp. Traffic is being diverted after the tarmac around a manhole lifted completely. Northbound traffic is unaffected.

Last week Northglen News reported on the road surface being impacted by last week’s heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZN COGTA) confirmed that search and rescue operations are continuing in the south of Durban for those who were swept away by the heavy rains.

This comes after five people, two adult males and three children, were tragically swept away into a canal during the early hours of the morning in Lamontville.

Two other fatalities were also reported as the bodies of two women washed ashore at Brighton Beach and Ansteys Beach in Durban.

Roadways within the Ugu District and eThekwini Metro have experienced severe flooding and the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 2 weather warning, indicating the possibility of further rainfall throughout the day.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution while driving, as roads are exceptionally slippery due to the persistent rainfall.
