Chicken finds her roost at Durban and Coast SPCA

Given the name Lay-La, the hen also lives in one of the cat boxes at the coffee shop.

A STRAY chicken has taken up residence at the Durban & Coast SPCA and has won the hearts of staff and visitors at the association’s Springfield Park premises.

Not only has the hen found herself a new family and friends but she also gets on with the yard cats at the coffee shop nearby.

Given the name Lay-La, she also lives in one of the cat boxes at the coffee shop.

“Lay-La just arrived on our premises one day and we decided to keep her as she seemed to be at home. We held an internal naming competition where staff first nominated a name and then we all voted and the name with the most votes won. She lays eggs so ultimately we adopted the name Lay-La,” explained marketing manager for the SPCA, Tanya Fleischer.

“During the day she wanders around the premises, she also chases the hadedas and sometimes the yard cats, who stay out of her way, but also respect her. What makes Lay-La special is she is the first ‘official’ chicken at the SPCA. We don’t currently have any other farm animals but she’s found a home with us.”

The SPCA is looking for a sponsor for the plucky chicken. “If anyone is willing to help, they can pop onto our website to sponsor her. She can be found under the yard cat sponsorships, for R100, which is for her food. Just visit the SPCA website and scroll down to Lay-La’s picture,” she said.
