Cyclists help nab suspected muggers in Durban North

One of the suspects was armed with a pair of scissors.

THREE suspects were handed over to Durban North police for their alleged involvement in an armed mugging incident in Durban North on Tuesday (April 1).

The suspects, one of whom was armed with a pair of scissors, had held up a lady and robbed her of a cellphone near the corner of Old Mill Way and Adelaide Tambo Drive just after 05:50.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell, they were alerted to the incident via the Home Hawks Neighborhood Watch Crime Alert group.

“Our officers spoke to the victim, who reported that she had been approached from behind by two suspects, one armed with a pair of scissors. The suspects grabbed her bag, stole her cellphone, and attempted to flee. Fortunately, passing cyclists witnessed the incident and intervened, preventing the suspects from escaping.

“We detained the two suspects on scene. A bystander also reported seeing a third suspect, dressed in a pink shirt and black pants, fleeing in a specific direction. Our team began searching the area and located the third suspect on Lonsdale Drive,” he said.

Powell said despite an extensive search, they were unable to recover the stolen phone.

“It is believed the phone was hidden in a nearby bush by the third suspect. A search for the stolen phone was conducted but was unfortunately unsuccessful. A thank you to the Home Hawks Neighborhood Watch for their assistance on scene,” he said.
