According to Tyron Powell, spokesperson for Marshall Security, their Emergency Dispatch Centre received an alert at approximately 14:18 after a customer in a white Isuzu bakkie allegedly drove off without paying for R350 worth of fuel.

“As the fuel attendant was closing the cap, the driver sped off without settling the bill,” he said.

A description of the vehicle was circulated to Marshall Security’s Armed Response Officers and Special Operations Team (SOT), who launched an immediate search.

At around 15:30, the bakkie was spotted on Zenith Drive near Gateway.

“As officers moved to intercept the vehicle, two suspects abandoned it and attempted to flee on foot,” said Powell.

A foot chase ensued through the streets of Umhlanga, resulting in the successful apprehension of both suspects.

Upon inspection of the vehicle, officers discovered false number plates had been fitted in an apparent attempt to obscure the bakkie’s identity.

“The original plates were found concealed behind the seats,” said Powell.

The suspects were handed over to Durban North SAPS. Marshall Security thanked Durban North SAPS Crime Prevention and Greenwood Park SAPS for their assistance in the arrest.
